HVAC Maintenance Checklist: Keep Your System Running Strong This Summer
The first day of summer is always a big deal—but did you know it’s also National HVAC Tech Day? To mark the occasion, we’ve put together a simple HVAC maintenance checklist to help keep your system in top shape all season long.
Your HVAC is one of your home’s most valuable systems, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Without proper maintenance, it can lose efficiency, use more energy, or even break down unexpectedly.
The good news? With just about an hour of care every 30–90 days, you can keep your HVAC running longer, stronger, and more efficiently. Here’s how.
Step 1: Turn Off Your HVAC Unit
Before doing any maintenance, turn off the power at the circuit breaker. This ensures safety and prevents the unit from turning on while you work.
Step 2: Clean Up Outdoor Debris
Clear away any leaves, branches, or debris around your outdoor A/C unit. These can block airflow, lower efficiency, or damage the system.
Step 3: Inspect Your Air Conditioner
Check for signs of wear, leaks, or rust on hoses and connections. Look for bent or missing fan blades and ensure the grill is intact and protective.
Step 4: Change Your HVAC Air Filters
Air filters should be replaced every 30–90 days, depending on usage.
How to do it:
- Make sure the unit is still off.
- Remove the panel holding the filter (secured by screws or clips).
- Replace the old filter with a new one, ensuring the arrows face toward the unit.
Choosing the right filter:
- Check the old filter for size (e.g., 20x20x1).
- If no size is listed, measure the length, width, and depth.
Step 5: Wipe Down and Clean
Replace the filter cover, then:
- Wipe down the panel and air vents with a damp paper towel or microfiber cloth.
- Vacuum around the unit to prevent dust from entering your new filter.
Step 6: Turn the System Back On
Once cleaned and reassembled, power your system back on and check:
- Is it blowing cold air?
- Is the airflow strong?
If so, you’re good to go!
Pro tip: Schedule Professional Inspections
Even with great DIY care, it’s wise to have a licensed HVAC technician inspect your system every six months to catch issues early and prevent costly breakdowns.
Protect Your HVAC Investment
Breakdowns can still happen, even with proper maintenance. That’s where an America’s Preferred Home Warranty (APHW) can help—covering repairs for failures due to normal wear and tear so you can get your system fixed fast.
