One Step Back, Two Steps Forward

It all started when he was walking down the street—literally. LaMont Williams would frequently pass by the home of Mike Sadler on his walks, and one day they struck up a conversation. Eventually it led to career talk, at which point LaMont expressed an interest in working for America’s Preferred Home Warranty (APHW), where Mike serves as vice president of operations.

LaMont had been with the same call center long enough to work his way up to management and training, but it was awfully impersonal. “We were passed around from corporation to corporation,” he said. “We didn’t even know who the owner was, let alone know him personally,” and Mike’s description of the family atmosphere at APHW caught his interest.

The only thing was, LaMont would have to start as a customer service representative (CSR), which is what APHW was hiring for. “Mike said I might spend a couple years on the call center floor and other opportunities could arise,” he said. LaMont saw potential in the company’s rapid growth, “so, I ‘immigrated’ to APHW. I was essentially banking on myself, that I would be able to work into opportunities as they arose,” he said.

A couple of years later, “Right according to schedule,” he joked, LaMont was promoted to a position in Customer Care. “I learned about the company from the floor up, and there is value in that. Moving into Customer Care has also been a learning experience—it’s helped me learn more about the company and the customers we serve, and to offer important insight into the development of APHW.”

Now LaMont looks forward to his next opportunity, as he was just promoted again to start training as an Inside Sales Manager for Strategic Accounts in August 2018. “This is another opportunity to bring my enthusiasm, my personality, and my work ethic to the organization, to help it continue to grow and develop,” he said.

While he’s looking forward, though, LaMont never forgets where he started. “We have to remember that CSRs are on the front line, and are incredibly important to the overall organization,” he said. And he wants people to know that the potential for growth is there, only limited by what you put in to it. “The people here will be able to see your focus, and if they can see it, they will also help you toward your goals.”

America’s Preferred Home Warranty is currently seeking applicants for customer service positions, and will be holding a job fair on Tuesday, July 24, from 9 a.m. - Noon and 1 - 3 p.m. at 5775 Ann Arbor Road, Jackson, MI, 49201.

“Part of success is just showing up and focusing on a daily basis,” LaMont said, suggesting that folks shouldn’t let any job title dissuade them from the potential it could lead to. “Don’t get caught up in a rush and miss your opportunity—be patient. When you do that, you allow others to observe your abilities. Our work environment is filled with people who seek to develop others—people who can potentially direct you to areas of the company where your skills and expertise are needed.”
